Books π
Stopped reading Wind Up Girl because I got new books over Christmas, so been reading two new Slough House novels, Slough House and Bad Actors. I enjoyed them both, and it’s going to be interesting to see how they get adapted to the TV show.
I got a copy of Designing Data-Intensive Applications it’s been on my list of technical books to read for a while. Now I just need the discipline to read it. I’m terrible for not finishing technical books. Or really any non-fictions books if I’m honest with myself.
NAS & Music π
I bought a Beelink Me Mini. I plan on using it as a sorting of NAS come media server. I’ve got loads of ripped CDs that I’m not listening to because I use streaming services and I’d like to get back to listening to at least some of them. So I’m going to see what music streaming software I can put on the new machine and stream to my desktop. What I’m really looking for is the ability to just hit play and for it to just randomly play from my entire catalog. I’ve put TrueNas on it for now and trying out Navidrome for streaming from the NAS. I’ve added just a single drive to it for now. I’ll see how it goes and will probably expand the storage once I’m happy with things.
To pair with Navidrome I’ve been using Supersonic. It works nicely, not overly fussy, it displays my library and I can start a random playlist form the “All track” view.
I’ve ended up buy some CDs as well, something I’ve not done in a long time. I picked up a couple of second hand old albums and something brand new. I’ve got lots of music that I acquired by dubious means in the past, I think I’m going to purchase a lot of it now. I’m going to slowly work through stuff and delete things I’m just not that interested in and buy the stuff that I really would like to listen to more.
Vim π
I made a small change to my NeoVim config which has been a nice QoL improvement. I’ve added a spell check toggle. It’s really small but it makes vim a nicer environment to write in. Once you have the spell check turned on the most important thing to remember is that z= will show you suggested spellings for the word under/after the cursor.
Go π
I realised that using tutorial I’d previously been using wasn’t working for me. Firstly I wasn’t being consistent enough with it and secondly I need to build something not just go through a set of exercises showing different features. So I took a python script that I wrote a long time ago and re-implemented it in Go. It’s not much but I felt like I learnt more doing that than any tutorials. There is maybe more that I’ll do to that script like put some tests in but overall I was pretty happy with how it came out.
Work π
I had the unfortunate pleasure of being made redundant for the first time in my career. It wasn’t totally unexpected, the business has been struggling for at least a year and it hadn’t gone unnoticed that they weren’t filling roles when people left. Thankfully I’d been looking for a new role and had accepted a offer just a couple of days before being let go. So I’ve landed on my feet, I just hope that other that were affected land on their feet as well. I’m on garden leave for 2 months then start my new job. So a couple of months being paid to do nothing, not too bad really.
